Port Lincoln Football League secretary Robyn Rowsell said the league was excited about hosting the championships this year.

PORT Lincoln is getting ready towelcome footballers from across South Australia as the city hosts the Motor Accident Commission SA Country Football Championships on July 9 and 10.

The championships are run annually with each of the state’s six zones competing against each other.

More than 230 people are expected to visit the region for the weekend, not including community football delegates, supporters and those visiting for the Kinlough Cup.

The Port Lincoln Football League has been in constant contact with the South Australian Community Football League since August last year when it was announced the town would host the event.

League secretary Robyn Rowsell said preparations were going well and it was fortunate the event did not clash with any other community events.

"People from all over Eyre Peninsula come down for Mortlock, they love their football so we hope they will support this too," she said.

Accommodation has been organised for all the visiting teams with players and officials staying at venues including the Port Lincoln YHA, Port Lincoln Tourist Park and the Port Lincoln Hotel.

The hotel’s sales and marketing manager Lauren Maxfield said everyone was excited as Port Lincoln was such a football orientated town.

"We’re enthused about being part of the event and have become sponsors of the event to help bring it here so we’re very excited," she said.

Each of the Port Lincoln Football League clubs will support the championships by hosting one of the zone teams for dinners on Friday and Saturday nights.

The weekend will include a number of events including an official launch at Centenary Oval from 2.30pm on the Saturday, with the Country Championships dinner at the Port Lincoln Hotel later in the evening.

It is also a big weekend for junior football with the Kinlough Cup set to be played at the Ravendale Sporting Complex on Saturday, July 9.

"If you enjoy the quality of football at the Mortlock Shield, this is that next level up again," Mrs Rowsell said.
